VEIN Weekly: Triage

VEIN Weekly: Triage

Hi everyone! Welcome to another VEIN Weekly. As of this writing we're working hard on getting Hotfix 2 out. We're back from GDC and moving full-throttle with development.

All changes below are for the upcoming Hotfix 2 and on the experimental Steam beta unless otherwise specified.

We've added some better crash reporting that will help us triage and fix crashes (and general bugs) easier. It's automatic based on your telemetry settings. We still don't collect any personally identifying information whatsoever unless you opt into 'full' telemetry; even then that's just used to link crashes you've experienced together so we can get a better picture of what's happening.

We've done a bunch of crash fixes as a result of the above.

We've updated how keybind displays work behind the scenes so that (in the future) we can show glyphs for whatever specific controlller/gamepad you're using.

We fixed item variants not loading properly. Fifty-Sevens have two finish materials in game right now, and that was toggling whenever people loaded their save. This also applies to some common items like potato chips or sodas.

Dismantling a firearm will now give you the bullets back.

We updated admin zones to include the ability to exclude zombies or animals from spawning. I thought I had added this when we added the feature but I guess not. It was simple enough to add. Also, godmode will now disregard permission zone limitations for placing items or moving furniture.

We fixed a couple weird bugs, like grenades and AT4 shells not exploding in multiplayer, or school projectors not loading in save games after being moved.

Apparently fabric softener bottles weighed 6.0kg when empty, among a few other oddities. We've adjusted the weights of a few bottle items to be reasonable with reality.

Bows and arrows should now work again in Dead Air Depths. They were hitting the lack of air down there and freezing still.

Did you know you can wire a fluid barrel to a washing machine, then fill the fluid barrel from that washing machine, allowing for infinite water? Not after Hotfix 2. Use it while you can on the main branch.

We're allowing placement of items on built objects/furniture, so you can now place small items on fireplaces/bookshelves/etc. This may have unintended consequences because it's a big change but I think it should be fine.

Radial menus will now center the cursor on open.

We've redone a bit of the snow effect transition during winter. We fixed grass being visible in winter after a small radius around the player. It's because of a performance optimization we did to decrease excessive details far away from you.

We fixed anti-aliasing and screen percentage resetting on settings changes. It's due to how we programmed in FSR.

Speaking of FSR, we've added DLSS to the game. A ton of you requested this. It'll help with performance a bit on lower end PCs at the cost of image quality, but that's your decision to make.

Notifications for stat gains of the same type (e.g. sprinting, punching, etc.) will now be coalesced into one notification to prevent too much spam. Some other UI fixes were made as well, such as the medical menu having negative values sometimes or the cursor changing when hovering over buttons with text.

The audible distance of radios has been increased now that there's actual music for them.

On experimental, we now categorize uniquenesses by type as the list is getting too large.

We've started working on some new tech on experimental for detecting weather on materials, so that e.g. there will never be puddles indoors or under trees. It's still work in progress though.

So that's about it for this weekly; we've only had two days as we just got back from GDC on the weekend. We're pushing hard to get 0.023h2 out, which shouldn't be too long after this writing.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week!
